Dr. Alain Carpentier received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1966 from the University of Paris and in 1975 he received his PhD in chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Paris. He was appointed as a member of the cardiac surgery staff of Hopital Broussais in 1968 before being named the Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in 1982. He has also been appointed Adjunct Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Professor Alain Carpentier has authored more than 500 scientific publications and ten books. He is the recipient of many scientific distinctions and awards including the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award in 2007, the Grand Prix Mondial Cino del Duca in 1996 and the 5th Scientific Achievement Award of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2005. He is an honorary member of several prestigious international scientific societies and universities and was elected President of the French Academy of Sciences in 2011. He has developed numerous teaching programs worldwide, and founded the Vietnam Heart Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, regarded by the World Heart Organization as the most successful program in transferring technology and responsibility to developing countries.
Regarded as the father of modern valvular surgery, Alain Carpentier developed the first artificial biological valve used in clinical practice. He also pioneered techniques of reconstructive valve surgery and introduced the concept of annular remodeling using prosthetic rings. Currently more than 250,000 patients with valvular heart disease benefit from these treatments each year. Other scientific original contributions include the development of dynamic cardiomyoplasty, surgical techniques for the treatment of complex cardiac malformations, and mini-invasive and robotic cardiac surgery. Recently, his research team developed and implanted the first successful artificial bronchus to avoid pneumonectomy in lung cancer.

An internationally-acclaimed surgeon, scientist, inventor, and teacher, few individuals have had such a profound and enduring effect on the practice of medicine and healing of the human heart as Dr. Albert Starr.
Dr. Starr is currently the Director of Academic Affairs and the Medical Director, Bioresearch and Development for Providence Health & Services, Oregon. In these capacities, he oversees the support, development and continued advancement of patient care through clinical research and education throughout the Providence Centers of Excellence, representing a broad swath of disciplines, including cardiac and vascular, cancer, neurosciences and aging.
In 1960, Dr. Starr and Portland engineer Lowell Edwards teamed up to invent the world's first successful artificial mitral valve, which Dr. Starr used when performing the world's first clinically successful mitral valve replacement surgery later that same year. The mitral valve version was followed with an aortic model and, in 1963, Dr. Starr performed the world's first successful triple valve replacement at Oregon Health & Science University during his tenure there as chief of cardiopulmonary surgery. In 1985, he performed the first heart transplant in Oregon and initiated the state's heart transplantation program. Through his work with the Starr-Wood Cardiac Group, Dr. Starr introduced open-heart surgery to the western United States, for both adult and pediatric cases, contributing many refinements to this now-common procedure and influencing cardiovascular surgeons in major centers around the world.
Dr. Starr is also a pioneer in outcomes research. Since 1960, Dr. Starr and Gary Grunkemeier, Ph.D., have tracked and studied the long-term results of Dr. Starr's heart surgeries, using annual updates on nearly 20,000 patients. The findings have enhanced treatment in Oregon and far beyond, through hundreds of scientific journal articles and presentations at medical symposia around the globe.
Additionally, Dr. Starr has taught advanced surgical techniques to heart specialists throughout the world. His students have included more than 250 cardiac fellows from 25 countries.
A native of New York, Dr. Starr earned his undergraduate degree at Columbia University (formerly Columbia College) and his medical degree from Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons. After an internship at Johns Hopkins, he completed his General and Thoracic Surgical Residencies at Bellevue and Presbyterian Hospitals in New York City. He was recruited to Oregon in 1957 to head a new heart surgery program at the University of Oregon Medical School.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Starr has garnered numerous awards and honors. Most recently, he shared international accolades with Dr. Alain Carpentier as co-winners of the prestigious 2007 Albert Lasker Award in the category of Clinical Medical Research, for the development of prosthetic mitral and aortic valves, which have prolonged and enhanced the lives of millions of people with heart disease.
A sampling of Dr. Starr's many other awards includes the prestigious 2008 Phoenix Hall of Fame Innovators Award in recognition of his contributions to cardiac surgery and the development of prosthetic mitral and aortic valves. In 2001, he received the Croix de Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur, in recognition of his contributions to cardiac surgery and collaboration with the French scientific community. Presented by President Jacques Chirac, the Legion d'honneur is France's highest civil merit award, created by Napoleon Bonaparte more than 200 years ago to acknowledge uniquely courageous military service and recognize civilian recipients who have made exceptional contributions to France. In 2000, Dr. Starr received the International Heart Pioneer award from the Societe de Chirurgie Thoracique Cardio-Vasculaire de Langue Francaise, one of only 11 American surgeons to have received this honor. He was the second American to receive the Leriche Award from the International Vascular Society, and in 1988, he became the sixth U.S. physician and the first cardiac surgeon to receive the American College of Cardiology's Distinguished Scientist Award.
Dr. Starr is an active member in a variety of international and national professional societies and organizations. Among his many memberships and positions held, he served as president of the American Society of Thoracic Surgeons from 1985 to 1986, as well as chairman, Thoracic Advisory Board for the American College of Surgeons. He holds numerous honorary degrees and has garnered honors from various prominent universities and organizations, including Lewis and Clark College, Reed College, Portland State University and Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon; Columbia University in New York; University of London; the American College of Surgeons; the Western Thoracic Surgical Association; and the Society of Transpercutaneous Valve Replacement.

Dr. Chitwood graduated from Hampden-Sydney College (1968) and received his medical degree from the University of Virginia (1973). He completed the ten-year general and cardiothoracic surgical residency (1984) at Duke University under David C. Sabiston, Jr., M.D. His NIH sponsored research training there was under the direction of Andrew S. Wechsler, M.D. In 1984 he was recruited by the East Carolina University School of Medicine to begin the cardiac surgery program. From 1984 until 2003, he was the Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and from 1995 to 2003 was Chairman of the Department of Surgery. After founding the East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI), a 250 million dollar construction project, he was promoted to ECHI Director and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor: Health Sciences. He planned the development of the new integrated Department of Cardiovascular Sciences (cardiology, cardiac surgery, and vascular surgery). The ECHI Robotic Clinical and Training Center was the first of its kind and led the two FDA-Intuitive Surgical clinical trials that eventuated in approval for robotic mitral valve surgery. The center has trained over 350 surgeons world wide and mentors from there have helped start robotic cardiac surgical programs in 13 countries. Currently, the ECHI and Department are involved in clinical trials associated with the NHLBI Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network
Dr. Chitwood is a member of 25 professional societies and colleges, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American College of Cardiology, The American College of Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He peer reviews for seven scientific journals. His scientific articles number over 200 and he has written 75 book chapters. His other honors include: election to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society (1983), O. Max Gardner Award (2004) from the University of North Carolina Board of Govenors, National Phi Kappa Phi Scholar (2005) Award, National Mended Hearts: Dwight Harken Award (2005), Honorary Doctor of Science from Hampden Sydney College (2005), and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2009). In 2007 he was named the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Distinguisher Chair, the largest endowed chair in the University of North Carolina System. He is a past President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society for Heart Valve Disease, and the Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
His recent scientific interests relate to advancing mitral valve and coronary artery surgery, through new innovative approaches and multi-diciplinary techniques that will provide both the best evidence-based and least invasive outcomes for patients. Having performed nearly 700 robotic mitral valve repairs, he wants to perfect imaging methods that can model and simulate mitral repairs for both intraoperative planning and team training. The largest gap to not having more patients undergo a mitral repair, instead of a replacement, resides in limited experience of individual surgeons, inadequate valve exposure and visualization, impeded ergonomics, and inability to formulate dynamic reconstructions, preoperatively.

Dr. Lawrence H. Cohn was born in San Francisco, CA. He received his baccalaureate from the University of California, Berkeley with honors and his M.D. from Stanford School of Medicine (AOA). He received his graduate training at Boston City Hospital, National Heart Institute, University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University. He has been on the staff of the Brigham and Women's Hospital since 1971. Dr. Cohn has been a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School since 1980 and in 2000 was awarded the first endowed Chair in Cardiac Surgery at Harvard Medical School, the Virginia and James Hubbard Chair in Cardiac Surgery. He is the past Chair of the Brigham and Women's Physicians Organization. Currently, he serves as Physician Director of Medical Device Technology for Partners HealthCare Systems and is the Chair of the Physician and Scientist Fundraising Group at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Cohn was awarded an honorary Masters of Medicine from Harvard in 1989 and a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Paris in 1992. In 2005 he was the recipient of the Paul Dudley White Award, the highest award given by the American Heart Association.
Dr. Cohn has performed over 10,000 cardiac surgical operations and is a world-renowned expert in the field of valve repair and replacement surgery and minimally invasive heart valve surgery. He has published over 440 original scientific articles, 105 book chapters and 12 books, including Cardiac Surgery in the Adult, 2nd and 3rd Editions, the most referenced text book in adult cardiac surgery today. He has given more than 750 lectures worldwide. Dr. Cohn has held or holds office in The American Board of Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery of which he was President. He has also been the President of the American College of Chest Physicians and Chairman of the Board of the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. He is immediate Past-President of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education. He is a member of 20 other professional organizations, including honorary membership in four international organizations. He has served on the Editorial Board of 14 prestigious journals. He is currently the editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the most referenced Journal in the field of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Cohn has trained more than 150 residents and fellows at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Children's Hospital Medical Center Cardiothoracic Residency Program. Graduates of this program occupy responsible positions at major medical centers worldwide, including approximately 30 surgeons who are division chiefs or department chairs.
Dr. Cohn's clinical and research interest span the entirety of adult cardiac surgery including reconstructive valve surgery and minimally invasive technology. He also directed the Cardiac Surgery Laboratory from 1971-2001, which has a long interest in myocardial protection, cardiac transplantation and angiogenesis.
Dr. Cohn has had many non-medical consulting activities. He is a Board member of the Boston Public Library Foundation, an active member of the Museum of Fine Arts and recently retired as a Trustee of Massachusetts Financial Services (1989-2010), a mutual fund company.
Dr. Cohn resides in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. He is married to Roberta, has 2 daughters, Leslie Bernstein and Jennifer Cohn, two granddaughters, Carly and Rachel and son-in-law Stephen Bernstein. Dr. Cohn enjoys history, tennis, golf, skiing, fishing and sailing.

Robert Dion obtained the degree of Doctor in Medicine 'cum magna laude' in 1971 at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), and General Surgeon at the same University in 1977. In 1979, he qualified as a cardio-thoracic surgeon and worked at the University Hospitals of Leuven (Belgium), Rotterdam and Utrecht (The Netherlands). In 1984 he was elected Deputy Head of the Department of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). In 1992, he became Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Louvain and in 1995, Head of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospital of the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels. In January 2000, he was appointed Full Professor of Medicine at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) and Chairman of the Department of Cardio-thoracic Surgery at the Leiden University Medical Center. As from 2007, he is Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg in Genk (Belgium) and Guest-Professor and part-time surgeon in the Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospital Gasthuisberg (KUL) in Leuven (Belgium).

Dr. Jean-Noel Fabiani is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou in Paris. Currently he is the president of the board of administration of Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou.
He received his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Paris. He completed his internship and residency in general and cardiovascular surgery in Paris hospitals. Subsequently, he was appointed Chef de Clinique at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Later, he was appointed professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Hôpital Broussais in Paris. He is a member of the National Academy of Surgery in France.
Pr. Fabiani is the recipient of many scientific distinctions and awards including the "Young Investigator Award" from the European Society of Cardiology in 1976, Grand Prix de la Fondation GPA and Medaille de la Fonction Athena from Institut de France in 1986, and Victories of Medicine in 2006. He received the Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, France's highest civil merit award.
Pr. Fabiani has published more than 330 Pubmed articles with a special emphasis on the subjects of myocardial protection, valvular heart surgery, and aortic arch surgery. He is a co-editor of French Medico-Surgical Encyclopedia. He has published four books including two best-sellors.

Dr. Farzan Filsoufi is a Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is a cardiac surgeon involved in both research and clinical practice.
Dr. Filsoufi received his medical education at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris- University Rene Descartes. He completed his training in general and cardiothoracic surgery under world renowned Professor Alain Carpentier in Paris. He then joined the Faculty of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Broussais hospital and worked directly with Alain Carpentier. From 1999 until 2001, he performed an advanced clinical and research fellowship at Brigham and Women's hospital and Harvard Medical School under the direction of Dr. Lawrence H. Cohn. He was named Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2001 and joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2002.
Dr. Filsoufi's clinical interests include the surgical management of valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmias. He has special expertise in mitral valve reconstructive surgery, reoperative surgery, complex coronary artery revascularization and cardiac surgery in high risk patients.
Dr. Filsoufi's research has focused on the early and late outcomes of valvular surgery in patients with mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve diseases. He has extensively published in the field of cardiac valve prostheses and reconstructive valve surgery. In 2006, he received a patent for a novel system for minimally invasive mitral valve reconstruction. He is a co-author with Professor Alain Carpentier of the reference textbook, "Carpentier's Reconstructive Valve Surgery", which was published in 2010. He is the co-editor with Professor Alain Carpentier of the upcoming textbook, "Perioperative Care in Cardiac Surgery." He has published more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and book chapters in major cardiology textbooks. He has been on the editorial review board for prestigious journals in the field of cardiovascular surgery. He has been invited to present his research at medical symposia, national and international conferences.
Dr Filsoufi is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Society of Heart Valve Disease and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

Dr. Fuster serves The Mount Sinai Medical Center as Director of Mount Sinai Heart, the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute and the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health. He is the Richard Gorlin, MD/Heart Research Foundation Professor, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Fuster was the President of Science and is now the General Director of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain.
Among the seemingly countless positions of distinction that he holds are Past President of the American Heart Association, Past President of the World Heart Federation, Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences where he serves as Chair of the committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease, former member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Advisory Council, and former Chairman of the Fellowship Training Directors Program of the American College of Cardiology. Twenty-six distinguished universities throughout the world have granted him Honorary Doctorate Degrees.
Dr. Fuster is the recipient of two major ongoing NIH grant. To date, he has published more than 870 Pubmed articles on the subjects of coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis and thrombosis, and he has become the lead Editor of two major textbooks on cardiology, 'The Heart' (previously edited by Dr. J. Willis Hurst) and "Atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease" (with Dr. Eric Topol and Dr. Elizabeth Nabel). Dr. Fuster has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Nature journal that focuses on cardiovascular medicine (Nature Reviews, Cardiology, April 2009) and he is the Editor of the new "AHA Guidelines and Scientific Statements Handbook", which compiles all the latest information.
Dr. Fuster is the only cardiologist to receive the two highest gold medal awards and all four major research awards from the four major cardiovascular organizations: The Distinguished Researcher Award (Interamerican Society of Cardiology, 2005 and 2009), Andreas Gruntzig Scientific Award and Gold Medal Award (European Society of Cardiology, 1992 and 2007 respectively), Gold Medal Award and Distinguished Scientist (American Heart Association, 2001 and 2003 respectively), and the Distinguished Scientist Award (American College of Cardiology, 1993).
In addition, he has received the Lewis A. Conner Memorial Award by the American Heart Association, the James B. Herrick Achievement Award from the Council of Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association, and the 1996 Principe de Asturias Award of Science and Technology (the highest award given to Spanish-speaking scientists). In 2008, Dr. Fuster received the Kurt Polzer Cardiovascular Award from the European Academy of Science and Arts. In 2009, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award of the American College of Cardiology and then later that year, the prestigious International Arrigo Recordati Award for his Scientific Achievement in the development of Cardiovascular Imaging. Finally this June, Dr. Fuster received the Lefoulon Delalande Grand Prix, from the Institut of France, which is considered the most prestigious award given in the field of cardiovascular research.
After receiving his medical degree from Barcelona University and completing an internship at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, Dr. Fuster spent several years at the Mayo Clinic, first as a resident and later as Professor of Medicine and Consultant in Cardiology. In 1981, he came to Mount Sinai School of Medicine as head of Cardiology. From 1991 to 1994, he was Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He returned to Mount Sinai in 1994 as Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute and most recently, he has been named the Director of the Mount Sinai Heart.

Bruce Fye was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. After completing a medical residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, he returned to Hopkins for his cardiology fellowship. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar when he received a master's degree from the Institute of the History of Medicine.
In 1978, Dr. Fye joined the Marshfield Clinic (in Wisconsin), where he established the echocardiography laboratory and was chief of cardiology from 1981 to 1999. He joined the cardiovascular division of the Mayo Clinic in 2000 and is a Professor of Medicine and the History of Medicine. He has been director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Medical History since 2006. Dr. Fye is a past president of the American Osler Society (1988-1989), the American College of Cardiology (2002-2003), and the American Association for the History of Medicine (2008-1010).
Dr. Fye is the author of more than 200 historical and biographical papers and two books. His first book, The Development of American Physiology: Scientific Medicine in the 19th Century was published in 1987. His 1996 book, American Cardiology: The History of a Specialty and Its College, won the Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine. He has edited six books, including William Osler's Collected Papers on the Cardiovascular System, published in 1985. He is completing a book entitled The Mayo Clinic and Cardiology: Specialization in the 20th Century.

Randall B. Griepp was born in Marshall, Minnesota in 1940, and was educated in a series of public and military schools, growing up throughout the USA and Western Europe as his family followed his father's work as an Army Chaplain. He received his B. S. in biology at the California Institute of Technology and his M. D. at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His medical internship was at Bellevue Hospital where he met his wife Dr. Eva Botstein Griepp. He returned to Stanford completing his surgical training and joining the faculty in 1974.
Under the tutelage of Norman Shumway he and his fellow resident and faculty colleague Edward Stinson established the most successful cardiac transplantation program in the world writing the papers that put surgical technique, postoperative immune management, and long term care of transplant patients on a firm scientific base. His first personal heart transplant was on 1/1/70: the patient lived for 26 years.
From 1977 to 1985 Dr. Griepp served as Professor of Surgery and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and also as Interim Chief of Surgery from 1977-79 at SUNY Downstate Medical in Brooklyn. His primary focus was the establishment of a cardiac transplantation program and the introduction of neonatal cardiac surgery.
In 1985 Dr. Griepp joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as Professor and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 1988 the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery was established and Dr. Griepp served as its first Chairman until he stepped down in 2001 to devote fulltime to clinical surgery, teaching, and research. Cardiac Transplantation was established at Mt. Sinai in 1987, and as part of the building of the congenital heart surgery program Dr. Griepp performed the first successful arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries and the first successful complete correction of hypoplastic left heart syndrome in the New York area , both in 1987.
Dr. Griepp has had a lifelong interest in surgery of the aorta and his 1975 paper on Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest for Aortic Arch Surgery was selected as one of the twenty seminal papers in the development of the field of cardiac surgery. He has written and lectured extensively in the field, and in 1988 he and Steven Lansman established the Biennial Aortic Symposium recognized as the preeminent forum in the world for Thoracic Aortic Surgery. Dr. Griepp has enjoyed 20 years of continuous NIH funding for his work on brain and spinal cord protection during aortic and cardiac surgery.
Dr. Eva Botstein Griepp is a pediatric cardiologist at NYU and a partner in Dr. Griepp's research. His son Matthew is a third year medical student.

Dr. Annapoorna Kini performs over 1,000 coronary interventions annually (the highest number by a female interventionalist in the United States) with an extremely low complication rate of < 0.3 percent. In August of 2009 and February 2010, a New York state report named her as the safest operator among 350 other physicians in the state of New York. She is highly regarded for performing the complex coronary interventions especially in chronic total occlusions for patients with advanced heart disease with utmost safety and excellent long-term results. She has become the national expert on heart assist devices, including Tandem Heart and Impella, which are crucial for many of these high-risk cases. Dr. Kini also specializes in the non-coronary interventions of mitral and aortic balloon valvuloplasty, and alcohol septal ablation for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Dr. Kini has been the recipient of many honors and awards including: First place in Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology and Anatomy, at Mangalore University, Gold medal for best outgoing student in the Final MBBS class of 1990, Young Investigator Award of American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin (AACIO) in 1999, "Rock Star of Science," award from American Heart Association, New York in 2011 and the "Dean's Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, 2011.
Besides being a superb interventionalist, Dr. Kini is an excellent teacher, educating both cardiology and interventional fellows on various aspects of cardiac catheterization and coronary interventional techniques. She continuously stays involved in various teaching activities including, directing and teaching coronary anatomy to Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology fellows, conducting Journal Club to Interventional Cardiology Fellows at Mount Sinai Hospital, as well as carrying out cardiac catheterization lab research meetings. From 2002, Dr. Kini along with Dr. Samin Sharma have directed the annual Live Symposium of Complex Coronary and Vascular Cases and currently host a monthly live webecast which is broadcasted on www.heart.org and www.ccclivecases.org every third Tuesday of the month at 8am EST. The live webcast is watched by over 3,000 physicians world-wide per month.
Dr. Kini has authored >150 Abstracts, 7 book, chapters and invited contributions and 65 peer reviewed publications and 6 non-peer reviewed publications along with lecturing and Grand Rounds on interventionist various topics. Dr. Kini's procedural excellence contributed to the success of the New York State Department of Health report in January 2011 which stated that Mount Sinai Medical Center's Cardiac Catherization Laboratory achieved the highest safety rating among coronary intervention (PCI). No other center has achieved this level of safety rating for both emergency and non-emergency cases since public reporting of PCI results began in 1994. Dr. Annapoorna Kini's clinical interests include; general cardiology, interventional cardiology, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, chronic total occlusions, and valvular heart disease.

Roberto Lang is currently the Director of the Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Laboratories at the University of Chicago and Associate Director of the Cardiology Fellowship training program. He is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He has published more than 550 manuscripts on cardiac imaging and physiology during his career. Dr Lang has been a pioneer in the development of three dimensional transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. He serves as a manuscript review consultant for most cardiology peer-reviewed journals and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Echocardiography, Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging and Journal of Echocardiography, the official journal of the Japanese Society of Echocardiography. Lang's major research interests are the clinical utility of noninvasive techniques in assessing left ventricular contractile state/myocardial perfusion and Three Dimensional echocardiography. He was the president of the American Society of Echocardiography and has recently given the Edler Lecture in the last Scientific Sessions of the American Society of Echocardiography.

Roxana Mehran, M.D., FACC, FACP, FCCP, FESC, FAHA, FSCAI is a professor of medicine (cardiology) and health evidence and policy and director of interventional cardiovascular research and clinical trials at The Zena and Michael A. Weiner Cardiovascular Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY. Dr. Mehran completed her training in internal medicine at the University of Connecticut, where she also served as chief medical resident before continuing with fellowships in both cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Mehran is internationally recognized for her work in multicenter, multinational clinical trials, specializing in complex data analyses. She has developed several risk scores for bleeding and acute kidney injury to identify patients at risk for these complications. Previously (2004-2010), Dr. Mehran was an associate professor of medicine and director of outcomes research, data coordinating and analysis at the Center of Interventional Vascular Therapies at Columbia University, where she led a variety of projects focused on outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). She is renowned for her vast experience working with regulatory agencies to design and conduct clinical trials. Currently, she is one of several lead investigators who collaborate with the FDA to develop standard definitions for clinical trials in cardiovascular disease. Her research interests extend from mechanisms of restenosis to treatment and prevention of acute kidney injury in cardiac patients, outcomes research, as well as the advancement of pharmacologic and interventional treatments for acute coronary syndromes and acute myocardial infarction. In addition to founding a highly regarded academic research organization at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, where she has served as the chief scientific officer for the past 12 years, she is widely published and frequently invited to speak at both national and international scientific conferences. She has also served as the course co-director of the annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) meeting for the last 15 years and is a member of the editorial boards of multiple peer reviewed journals, including Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, Circulation Research, and Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions. She has served on the board of trustees of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the program committee of the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions, as well as the writing committee of the ACC/AHA PCI guidelines. She is currently a member of the board of directors for Harboring Hearts and the program chair for SCAI-Women in Innovation (-WIN) Initiative. Dr. Mehran is a practicing interventional cardiologist and enjoys teaching and mentoring fellows in the cardiology program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Professor Friedrich Wilhelm Mohr, born in 1951, studied medicine in Berlin, Bonn and Sydney.
Since 1994 he is Professor and Chief of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, University of Leipzig and Medical Director of the Leipzig Heart Center.
He is a member of numerous national and international societies and editorial boards. Professor Mohr is currently President of the German Society of Thoracic and Cardio Vascular Surgery, International Director of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and Past Congress President of the German Society of Cardiology.
Since 1996 Professor Mohr and his team have worked to develop the technique of minimal-invasive cardiac-surgery, in particular mitral valve repair. He is now one of the leading experts in this field.
He developed standardized Gore-Tex Loops for the replacement of chordae tendineae, which is a technique that is now used in cardiac surgery centers around the world.
Under his leadership the Leipzig Heart Center has also become one of the world's leading centers for transcatheter aortic-valve implantation (TAVI).

- Michel Pellerin is professor of surgery at the university of Montreal, where he also serves as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at the Montreal Heart Institute. He was Head of the Department Surgery from 2004 to 2012 and he is the actual Director of the Prospective Heart Valves Clinic.
- Dr Pellerin graduated in medicine at University Laval in 1985, then in General Surgery in 1990. He subspecialized in Cardiovascular surgery at the University of Montreal in 1993. Dr. Samin K. Sharma performs over 1500 complex coronary interventions annually (the highest in the country) while achieving an extremely low complication rate. According to New York State Department of Health reports (1994-2002, 2006-2008), has the highest angioplasty success rate (lowest mortality < 0.2%) for an interventional cardiologist in NY state since 1994, receiving prestigious **Star designation (statistically significantly lower then expected mortality). Under Dr. Sharma's leadership, Mount Sinai Hospital has become one of the best and busiest centers in New York, providing excellent care for all types of simple and complex high-risk heart patients. In addition to coronary interventions, Dr. Sharma specializes in the non-surgical treatment of mitral and aortic stenosis and percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Dr. Sharma serves on the Cardiac Advisory Board of the New York State since 2004 for coronary interventions that advises the health department and the Governor on issues of health policies and supervision, safety and appropriateness of the heart care by various hospitals in New York. Dr. Sharma received the Governor's Award of Excellence (2006), for his outstanding contribution to Medicine.
Dr. Sharma also has passion for teaching and fellows enjoy learning from his expertise, so much they awarded him the Simon Dack best teacher in cardiology division in 2000. Dr. Sharma travels to India 4-6 times a year to teach the art of angioplasty to Indian cardiologists. He is the vice-president of the Rajasthan development foundation and donated medical equipment worth one lack Rs/month for six years (2001-2007) to the Chief Minister relief fund to help Rajasthan's people in need. In addition to various academic awards, Dr. Sharma also received numerous awards from non-academic societies such as the "Rajasthan Gaurav," given by the Sanskriti organization of Rajasthan and the Rajive Gandhi Memorial Award.
Under the directorship of Dr. Sharma, The Live Symposium of Complex Coronary & Vascular Cases (www.cccsympsoium.org) started in 1998 and has had overwhelming every year (attended by >500 delegates). Major emphasis of the live course has been the technical aspects of safely performing complex coronary interventions. Dr. Sharma has been the recipient of numerous awards for excellence to the medical society and the community, to name a few recent ones: 2011 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, 2011 American Heart Association, Achievement in Cardiovascular Science & Medicine Award, 2011 American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), 2010 Association of Indians in America (AIA) for excellence in Medicine, 2010 Honored by AAPI forum of Tri-state area for academic excellence, 2003-2007 Best Doctors, 2008-2011 Super Doctors, 2007 Jacobi Medallion Award at Mount Sinai Hospital, 2007 Physician of the Year at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Sharma received his medical degree from S.M.S. Medical College in 1978, Jaipur, India, where he was ranked the number one student in his medical school having received eight gold medals and five honors. In 1983, he came to New York to undergo residency in Internal Medicine at the NY Infirmary-Beekman Downtown Hospital (1983-1986), fellowship in Cardiology in Elmhurst Hospital (1986-1988), and interventional training at Mount Sinai Hospital (1988-1990). He was then appointed as an attending at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1990 where he is currently the Director of Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (since 1996), and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Institute (2004), and is the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Professor of Medicine, Cardiology (2002). He has authored over 130 articles, 300 abstracts, 12 book chapters and two books to his credit.
